Photographic documentation of the water damage and corrosion

Honda Power Tailgate Control Unit Label showing part number 74970-THR-A12

Control Unit Identification

The power tailgate control unit (Part #74970-THR-A12) made in Japan. This is the component that failed due to water damage from the body seam leak.

Circuit board showing green corrosion and water damage

Circuit Board Corrosion

Extensive green corrosion visible on the PCB. Note the discoloration patterns indicating repeated water exposure over time—not a single incident.

Close-up of circuit board corrosion showing dried water stains

Water Damage Detail

Close-up showing dried water stains and corrosion patterns. The staining shows where water pooled and evaporated repeatedly, indicating a slow leak over an extended period.

Additional Documentation

Additional photos of the rust behind panels, the seam failure points, and the overall condition will be added.

Understanding the Defect

What Happened

  • 1. The adhesive/glue used to seal body panel seams failed
  • 2. Water entered through the failed seams during normal driving conditions
  • 3. Water accumulated in the tailgate area over time
  • 4. Repeated wet/dry cycles caused corrosion on electronics
  • 5. Power tailgate control unit eventually failed

Key Evidence Points

  • Green corrosion indicates prolonged moisture exposure
  • Dried water stain patterns show pooling and evaporation cycles
  • Rust behind panels not visible during normal inspection
  • Same issue documented in 2018-2021 class action lawsuit
  • Vehicle only 3 years old—premature for this level of corrosion

Related: 2018-2021 Honda Odyssey Class Action

A class action lawsuit was filed for 2018-2021 Honda Odyssey models experiencing the same body seam glue failure causing water intrusion. The fact that my 2023 model exhibits identical symptoms suggests Honda did not fully resolve this manufacturing defect.

More information about the class action and how it relates to newer models will be added as research continues.
